Abstract: Perovskite photodetectors (PPDs) without charge transport layers (CTLs) have recently garnered significant attention due to the limitations associated with organic and inorganic CTLs in conventional vertically structured PPDs. However, CTL-free PPDs reported so far have suffered from poor performance and stability, primarily due to charge extraction losses, non-radiative recombination at interfaces, and surface degradation caused by air and moisture. In this study, we propose a self-powered CTL-free PPD based on 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction to address these challenges. We demonstrate CTL-free 2D/3D PPDs featuring a metal electrode/2D perovskite/3D perovskite/transparent conducting oxide (TCO) structure, in which the 2D perovskite layer is derived from n-hexyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTABr). Our CTL-free 2D/3D PPDs exhibit markedly improved photoresponse properties compared to 3D-only PPDs, attributable to surface passivation and enhanced charge extraction facilitated by the 2D perovskite layer. Notably, the CTL-free 2D/3D PPD exhibits comparable performance to conventional CTL-based 3D PPD (metal electrode/CTL/3D perovskite/CTL/TCO), with a faster response time and improved long-term stability. To gain deeper insights into the 2D perovskite materials, computational calculations are performed along with the detailed characterization of HTABr-based thin films. Overall, this study offers a promising approach for developing efficient, stable, and cost-effective PPDs for next-generation optoelectronic applications.
