Oxidation of Alloying Elements during ESR of Stainless Steel
WEI Jihe Xi'an Institute of Metallurgy and Construction Engineering,China.
    J. Mater. Sci. Technol., 1989, 5 (4): 235-246.
    Abstract   HTML   PDF (1070KB)
The oxidation of alloying elements during the ESR of stainless steel has been studied. The model previously developed by WEI and Mitchell for the chemical reactions and mass transfer processes during ESR was applied to the remelting of the high Cr steel 1Cr18Ni9(Ti).The laboratory data for the unsteady state A.C.ESR were analyzed and dealt with by the model. When the remelting process reached a steady state,an oxidant(Fe_2O_3 powder)or a deoxidant(Ca-Si powder or metallic Ca)was added to the slag bath. The results showed that this model is applicable to the remelting of stainless steel rather precisely, and it is expected that the model may offer a reliable basis for the control of composition during practical ESR of high alloy steel. Also, the oxidation of Cr in the steel must be noticed when its content is high;but it is entirely possible to adjust the Cr content of ingot within a considerable range, using a special technique by means of the slag-metal reactions during the remelting.

A New Analysis of Hydrogen Diffusion in Metals with Trapping
YA NC Ke CAO Mingzhou WAN Xiaojing GAO Shujun SHI Changxu Institute of Metal Research,Academia Sinica,Shenyang,China.
    J. Mater. Sci. Technol., 1989, 5 (4): 247-253.
    Abstract   HTML   PDF (659KB)
A new model of hydrogen diffusion in metals has been developed,it is more efficient to describe the hydrogen diffusion with trapping in metals. In the model newly developed an impli- cit dependence on time of hydrogen diffusion coefficient in metals with trapping was firstly built and it is shown that hydrogen diffusion coefficient will be different at different posi- tions in a dynamic process of hydrogen diffusion in a metal. Numerical solutions of the present model were obtained by finite difference method.By changing the parameters in the model the diffusion of hydrogen in a metal and the effect of trapping were described and discussed. And the comparison between the well known McNabb and Foster's model and the present model was also made.

Investigation in Crack Growth of A537 Steel and Its Weld Metal in Artificial Sea Water
ZANG Qishan LIU Kang KE Wei ZHU Ziyong Laboratory of Fatigue and Fracture of Sinica,Materials,IMR,China.Institute of Corrosion and Protection of Metals,Academia Sinica,Shenyang,China.
    J. Mater. Sci. Technol., 1989, 5 (4): 254-258.
    Abstract   HTML   PDF (429KB)
The crack growth rates of A537 c1.1 steel and its weld metal have been investigated both in air and in artificial sea water. The effects of stress ratio, frequency, residual stress of welds as well as corrosion products on cor- rosion fatigue crack growth rate have been exa- mined. Some electrochemical reactions occurred during tests and models for describing the cor- rosion fatigue crack growth process in low strength of offshore structural steel were discussed.

Activity of MnO in Blast Furnace-type Slags
ZHOU Jicheng TIAN Yanwen JIANG Zuoyao YANG Shaowei Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy,Academia Sinica,Shanghai,China.Northeast University of Technology,Shenyang,China.Jiao Tong University,Shanghai,China.
    J. Mater. Sci. Technol., 1989, 5 (4): 259-263.
    Abstract   HTML   PDF (500KB)
The activity of MnO in blast furnace-type slags CaO-SiO_2,CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3 and CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO at 1500℃ has been measured in a graphite crucible with Ag and Sn as solvent metals. The agreement between the values of γMnO obtained from the experimental results using Ag and Sn separately as the solvent metal is excellent. The major errors in the previous studies have proved to be the failure to take into account the exchange reactions involving Si and Mn and insufficient time for the establishment of equilibrium between slag and solvent metal. A new method is suggested for determining the activities of elements in metallic solutions. The method involves the separate equilibration of two metallic alloys, one of which contains the component of interest at a known activity, with a single slag.

Influence of Carbides and Strain-induced Martensite on Wear Resistance of Austenitic Medium Manganese Steels
JIANG Qichuan HE Zhenming CHEN Yanping Jilin University of Technology,Changchun,China.
    J. Mater. Sci. Technol., 1989, 5 (4): 268-272.
    Abstract   HTML   PDF (1123KB)
The abrasive wear behaviour of austenitic medium manganese steels was studied under weak corrosion-abrasive wear simulating the liner plate in wet metallic ore bail mill under non-severe impact-loading working condition. Results show that the work-hardening mechanism and the wear resistance of high carbon austenitic medium manganese steels differ from those of medium carbon austenitic medium manganese steel. Under non-severe impact and weak corrosion-abrasive wear, the wear resistances of high carbon and medium carbon austenitic medium manganese steels are 50-90% and 20-40% higher than that of Hadfield steel respectively.

Oxidation of Ion Plated Ni—Cr Alloy Film at 300℃
WANG Shuhe CHEN Xiuzhi WEN Lishi Institute of Metal Research,Academia Sinica,Shenyang,China.
    J. Mater. Sci. Technol., 1989, 5 (4): 273-278.
    Abstract   HTML   PDF (832KB)
Investigation by using LAS 3000 surface analysis system showed that the oxide of Fe, Cr,Al formed during oxidation were Cr_2O_3,Fe_2O_3 and Al_2O_3,but only small amount of nickel oxide was found. The composition of oxide layers for different oxidation durations varied in a similar way. In all cases, there exists an oxygen concentration peak in the composition profile of oxide layer. There is a transitional zone between oxide layer and alloy film. The thickness of oxide layer increases logarithmically with the time of oxida- tion. The ion plated Ni-Cr alloy film has very dense oxide layer and good oxidation resistance.

    Abstract   HTML   PDF (188KB)
Thermodynamic properties of 3Y_2O_3·5Al_2O_3 double compound have been determined with CaF_2 single crystal electrolyte galvanic cell at 1049 K to 1230 K.The galvanic cell used can be expressed as: Pt,O_2(g)丨Y_2O_3(s),YOF_((s))丨CaF_2丨YOF_((s)), 3Y_2O_3·5Al_2O_(3(s))丨Al_2O_(3(s))丨O_2(g),Pt, of which the cell reaction is; 3Y_2O_(3(s))+SAl_2O_(3(s))=3Y_2O_3·SAl_2O_(3(s)) The following result is obtained: A_fG°(3Y_2O_3·5Al_2O_3)=-939500+765.90T±710J/mol where,△fG°(3Y_2O_3·5Al_2O_3)is the free energy of formation of 3Y_2O_3·5Al_2O_3 from Y_2O_3 and Al_2O_3.
