    The Ionization Theory of Desulphurization of the Panzhihua Blast Furnace Slag

    With the proper choice of the ion species present in the Panzhihua blast furnace slag, the sulphur partition ratio was calculated based on the ionization theory of the slag. It can be concluded that TiO_2 reacts as an acidtc oxide and the Panzhihua ore or concentrate cannot be treated as a semi-self-fluxing ore.

    Misorientation Dependence of Diffusion along [001] Symmetrical Tilt Grain Boundaries

    Based on grain boundary structural unit model, on the analogy of electric circuit calculation, it was found that the diffusion coefficients of a geneyal intervenient boundary between the delimiting boundaries 1 and 2 can be written as D_(11)=[D_((11)1) sin(φ_0-△θ/2)+D_((11)2)]/sinφ_0 D_⊥=D_(⊥1)D_(⊥2)sinφ_0/[sin (φ-△θ)D_(⊥2)+sin(△θ/2)D⊥1)] and D_(11)/D_⊥sin~2φ_0=D_((11)1)/D_(⊥1)sin~2(φ-△θ/2) +[(D_((11)2)/D_(⊥1))+(D_((11)1)/D_(⊥2)]sin(φ_0-△θ/2)sin(△θ/2) +(D((11)2)/D_(⊥2))sin~2(△θ/2) where D_(11) and D_⊥ are the diffusion coefficients pardllel to and perpendicular to the tilt axis, respectively. The subscripts 1 and 2 refer to the delimiting boundaries 1 and 2 respectively, and φ_0, the angle between periodic vectors of the strtictuyal units S_1 and S_2 which composes solely of delimiting boundaries 1 and 2 respectively. The experimental data from Hoffman, Upthegrove and Sinnot and Couling and Smoluchowski are analysed.

    Titanium Transfer in Slag/Metal Systems for Ironmaking

    The smelting of titaniferous magnetite in blast fuynace in China is unique in the nature of problems and their solutions. Fundamentals of this successful technology will be discussed. Topics to be covered are: (1) the characteristics of high content TiO_2 in blast furnace slag; (2) influence of various factors on Ti transfer process; (3) raising oxygen potential for adequate fluidity of the slag with TiO_2 in the range of 25-30 wt-% and stability of TiC and TiN in slag.

    Crack Initiation under Cyclic Compression

    The crack initiation behaviour under cyclic compression foy the notched specimen was investigated. It has been found that the cycles for crack initiation increase with the increase of compressive mean stress, and the decrease of stress amplitude. The stress amplitude plays a more important role than the mean stress does. Photoelastic coating and finite element methods were employed to measure and calculate the stress field in the notched part. The resul ts show that the crack initiation under compression is attributed to the tensile stress which may exist during unloadtng. If the true stress state in the notch is compressive, no crack initiates.

    Plastic Deformation in Quench-and 650℃ Tempered Steel

    The variations of the dislocation structures in the quench and 650℃ tempered steel with increase of elongations have been investigated by using transmission electron microscopy. In the small elongation stage, the boundaries between ferrite and carbide in this steel can release dislocations. As the elongations increase, the moving dislocations in the ferrite slip onto the carbides. Then, the interaction between moving dislocations and dislocations released from this boundaries, and the interaction between the dislocations moving to the carbides in every slip plane occurs. Thereby, the dislocation tangles around the carbides can be formed. In the large elongation stage, the dislocation tangles with high dislocation density and the developed dislocation cells are formed.

    Identification of Phases in Aluminide Coatings by Means of Interference Layer Metallography

    Interference layer metallography was used to identify the phases present in the aluminide coating on superalloy IN738LC. They are: two intermetallic aluminides NiAl and Ni_3Al, y-solid solution and a Cr-rich solid solution, two sulphides M_(23)C_6 and MC, and two sulphides (Al,Cr)_3S_4 and (Cr,Ti)_3S_4. ZnS and ZnSe are proposed to be vapor deposited onto the surface of the specimen to get good colour contrast and good light-dark contrast. The refractive index and absorption coefficient of all these phases have been detemined.

    Coatings obtained with magnetron sputtering exhibit a columnay structure. There are nodular defects distributed in the coatings, which are fomed by radial growth of columnay grains in groups. The fomation of them does not necessarily depend on surface asperities of substrate. The columnar grain boundaries are enriched in oxygen, which causes microporosity in the intercolumnar regions.

    The Study on Quench Transformation in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al Alloy

    The quench transfomation in a Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al near B-titanium alloy was studied by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and optical micyoscopy. The quenching temperatures were above and below the β transus temperature. The phase constitutions of specimens quenched from various solution temperatures were identified and the phase morphologies were examined. In addition, the relationship between phase lattice parameters and quenching tempera- tures was given for α, β and α ~(11) phases. This alloy has a tendency of precipitation of athermal ω phase and formation of stress induced α~(11) mar- tensite from β phase during quenching. Quenched from the temperatures above the β transus tem- perature, the alloy mainly consists of β phase, a small amount of α~(11) martensite and athemal ω phase aye also present in the alloy. After quenching from the temperatures below the β transus temperature, the α phase appeays in the alloy in addition to the phases mentioned above.

    A Study on Synthesis Kinetics of YBa_2Cu_3O_x High Tc Superconductor Powder

    The synthesis kinetics of YBa_2Cu_30_x supercon- ductor was studied through comparing the calcina- tion (sintering) processes of different kinds of powders. It was shown that the temperature of synthesis of YBa_2Cu_30_x phase can be lowered from 950℃ to 800℃ through direct calcination of multiphase powder with uniform chemical com- position. The stress which is caused by the volume change during synthetic reaction breaks the particles. It facilitates the formation of highly active superfines of superconductor.
