    Thermodynamic Analysis of the Fracture Inheritance in Overheated Steels

    Based on the experimental result that Cr and C segregated on the prior grain boundaries of austenite in overheated steels,causing the inheritance of fracture mode after re-austeni- tization,a thermodynamic analysis is conducted through the calculation of equilibrium segregation amount of Cr and C in grain boundary at 860 and 1050℃ and the segregation kinetics of Cr is also calculated.Thermodynamic calculation gives an evidence that the segregation of Cr and C at grain boundaries may be regarded as one of the mechanisms of the fracture inheritance in overheated steels.

    Beryllium Surface Modified by B Ion Implantation

    Beryllium is implanted with 100 keV, 2×10~(17) B/cm~2 and post-implanted sample is annealed at 650℃ for 1 h.Hardness measurement indicates that the hardness increases with implantation and can further be modified by post-implantation heat treatment. Profile measurement shows that implantation causes contamination on the surface of beryllium. During annealing boron diffuses out of beryllium and carbon on surface diffuses into beryllium. Beryllium surface is modified by composition change and carbide formation.

    Effect of Heat Treatment on Acoustic Emission in 7075-T651 Aluminum Alloy

    The longitudinal(L),long-transverse(T) and short-transverse(S)orientated samples of precipitation-strengthened 7075-T651 aluminum alloy were examined. The acoustic emission(AE)characteristics measured during tensile deformation in the alloy were related to prior aging treatment and orienta- tions of samples. A rms AE peak occurred in all the samples at plastic strain greater than one percent. The heights of peaks have been measured as a function of prior heat treatment.The shift of the peak location was dependent on heat treat- ment in samples with L- and T-orientation. The pre-yield,burst-type emission(PYBE)were observed in S-orientated samples.The behaviours of PYBE were as a function of prior ageing treat- ment too. The stress and plastic strains at which the AE peak stress were generated were consistent with the peaks arising from the fracture and debonding of inclusions.Waveform frequency analysis of AE signals and fractographic observa- tions using SEM as well as data of microhardness and charpy test were also consistent with be- haviours of AE,that is,high stress required for the rms peak or the initiation of the PYBE, was higher for the heat treatment,at which the interface between inclusion and matrix was weaker.

    Optimal Control of a Tandem Cold Rolling System for Tracking Problem

    The optimal control principle and procedure of a tandem cold rolling system for tracking problem have been proposed in this paper for the first time. The state-space description of the tandem cold rolling system for the cold-strip mill of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company is: x_(k+1)=Ax_k+(_k,y_k=Cx_k+η_k The optimum performance index of the system for tracking problem is: J_(min)=minEr[(1/2)sum from k=0 to m e'_kOe_k sum from k=0 to m-1 u'_kRu_k] The authors have deduced the optimal control of the system for tracking problem as follows u_k~*=-S_k(Ay_k+_(k+1)-) the feedback gain matrix S_k is given by S_k=(B'P_(k+1)B-R)~(-1)B'P_(k+1) Pk satisfies the matrix difference equation p_k=P_(k+1)-[(S_k~(-1))'-B']~(-1)R(S_k~(-1)-B)~(-1)+Q with terminal condition P_m=Q. On the above-mentioned principle of optimal control,an optimal control procedure of the tandem cold rolling system has been obtained, and a computer simulation has been performed. The results of the simulation are satisfactory.

    The interaction parameters for various phases in the Ti-W and Pd-W systems were calcula- ted using phase diagram information by means of a numerical procedure.The approach differs significantly from the trial and error method and has the advantage of being very robust in the sense that one can make full use of the accurate experimental phase diagram data and deal with situations which are difficult or even impossible for the trial and error method. Using calculated parameters and lattice stability values for Ti,W and Pd given in literature, the diagrams of the above systems were recalcula- ted.The results are in good agreement with experimental information.

    The features of microstructure and their influence on mechanical properties on stress-rupture as well as thermal fatigue of directionally solidified DZ38G nickel-base su- peralloy have been investigated.It has been found that the contents of carbides on grain boundaries are increased and morphology of γ'- precipitates has been changed after testing. Particularly γ'-precipitates coalesced into raft-like in morphology perpendicular to the applied stress-axis have been observed that has no detrimental effect on the stress-rupture behaviour.The tendency of σ-formation has also been discussed.The σ-phase can be avoided when the process parameters are chosen appropriately during solidification.

    The effect of heat treatment on the corrosion performance of austenitic-ferritic duplex stain- less steel COR 25 in aqueous solution containing 60%H_3PO_4+4%H_2SO_4+1500 ppm Cl~- at 95℃ was in- vestigated.When the solution temperature was increased from 950℃ to 1230℃,the corrosion resistance increased by two orders of magnitude, as shown by electrochemical measurements,im- mersion tests and direct observation under the scanning electron microscope.The specimens heat treated at solution temperatures of 950℃ and 1030℃ were severely corroded along the phase boundaries;specimens treated at 113C℃ and 1230℃ tended to selective corrosion caused by the dissimilar chromium contents of the aus- tenite and ferrite phases after heat treatment.

    The effect of temperature and chloride ion concentration on the electrochemical behaviour of austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steel COR 25 in an aqueous solution of 60%H_3PO_4+4%H_2SO_4 is studied in this paper. The experiments show that the anodic active peak current on potentiodynamic polarization increases by an order of magnitude with an in- crease of temperature from 50℃ and with an increase of chloride ion from<1 mg/1 to 1500mg/1. Compared with the other materials tested, the austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steel shows favourable corrosion characteristics in electrochemical tests,being comparable to the fully austenitic alloy Sanicro 28,which has a higher chromium and nickel content,and is much better than GX3CrNiMo2010.Corrosion of the duplex material is normally phase selec- tive,with phase boundary attack after unfavour- able heat treatments.
