    Carbide Effects on Creep Crack Growth of Ni-Cr Austenitic Steels

    By controlling the carbon content of Fe-15Cr-25Ni alloys,three types of microstructures were obtained:single phase austenite (γ),γ+intergranular carbides, γ+intergranular carbides + intragranular carbides. Creep crack growth behaviour of the three alloys has been compared at 973 K and 1123 K. Intergranular carbides show higher creep crack growth resistance than intragranular carbides.Cav- ities nucleate at the triple junctions of grain bound- aries for single phase alloy,but at intergranular carbides for two-phase alloys.The precipitation of intergranular carbide not only changes the nucleation mechanism of cavities,but also inhibits the growth and coalescence of cavities.The precipi- tation of intragranular carbide obstructs the nucleation and growth of cavities furthermore.

    The microstructure of both {10(?)1} and {10(?)0} (directions perpendicular to the {10(?)1} and {10(?)0} planes) α-Si_3N_4 whiskers were investi- gated by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM).On one side of the {10(?)1} α-Si_3N_4 whiskers many planar defects were ob- served,two kinds of micrograins on one side of the {10(?)0} whiskers were found.In one type,sepa- rated α-Si_3N_4 (28 H) micrograins had the same orientation with respect to the matrix whisker;in the other type,connected polymicrograins consisted of both α-and β-Si_3N_4 (14H).

    The effect of Ca,Ba,Bi and Al on the amount of carbide in ductile iron weld metal,the microstructural characteristics of ADI weld metal and the effect of heat treatment process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ADI weld metal have been studied.On this basis the optimum composition of weld and the optimum heat treatment process of ADI weld metal were de- termined and a new electrode for arc cold-welding (i.e.,without preheat) of ADI was developed.The ductile iron welded joint free from eutectic carbide can be produced by using this electrode before austempering and the weld metal obtained after austempering has a microstructure and mechanical properties similar to those of ADI.The mechanical properties of welded joints can match the require- ment of ADI.

    The effect of C,Mn and heat-treatment on work-hardening of austenitic Mn steel and the work-hardening mechanism have been investigated under non-severe impact loading condition.The results show that the ability of work-hardening in- creases with the increase of C and aging tempera- ture but decreases with Mn.The work-hardening with high austenitic stability results mainly from dislocations,and that with low austenitic stability results mainly from combined effects of strain-in- duced martensite and high density of dislocations under non-severe impact loading conditions.The wear resistance of medium manganese steel (Mn7) is 1.64-2.46 times that of Hadfield steel (Mnl3).

    A new category of steel with excellent combi- nation of strength,toughness,strain-hardening ability and excellent resistance to high-stress,espec- ially to severe impact-loaded abrasion has been de- veloped with a new idea of abrasion-resistant ma- terial design.The steels have the microstructures of austenite film and bainitic ferrite laths in arrange- ment of extremely fine lath spacing and are chemically high-carbon low alloy ones.The effects of austempering temperatures on microstructures, mechanical properties,wear-resistance and behaviour of the austenite-bainite steels in impact-abrasion system have been emphatically studied.

    Nickel,as the carrier through which Fe atoms diffuse,obviously enhances the densification of sintered compact containing short cast iron fibre. When Ni content is above 4.5 wt-% there are some austenites in microstructure at room temperature, discontinuous cementite networks at the interfaces between austenites and pearlites,free graphite pre- cipitated in austenite and pores and Widmannst(?)tten carbide precipitated in austenite. When Ni content is about 12 wt-%,it leads to de- crease in densification ratio and change in fracture morphology of sintered compact from ductile to brittle.

    A set of correct expressions for calculating activities and activity coefficients from binary phase diagrams involving intermediate compounds are presented in this paper by the introduction of a correct parameter θ. The application of these expressions to system Mg-Sn shows that they are quite feasible.

    In this paper,such a new lateral displacement function is proposed that the lateral flow velocity is con- tinuous at the entry and the exit of deformation zone.A new kind of finite strip method—the third power B-spline finite strip method—is put forward to simulate strip rolling process.Front and back tension stresses are formulated.The computed results of the transverse distributions of the front and back tension stresses are close to the experimental results.The paper lays a foundation for further analysing the three-dimensional stresses and deformations of strip rolling.

    This paper introduces both laboratory experi- ment and equilibrium calculations concerned with the Si reduction and reoxidation.The results give evidence that the Si transport in different directions just exists in the furnace hearth synchronistically, by which the desulphurization is also affected.The problems noticed for smelting tow Si pig iron are given.
