Abstract: Traditional growth restriction factor Q calculation methods only consider the liquidus slope and partition coefficient in multicomponent alloy systems, which leads to their failure. Herein, this study proposes a universal model for the dendrite growth restriction factor Qx with a new calculation method, and applies it to predict the influence of solute elements on the dendrite size of high nitrogen stainless steel (HNSS) during pressurized solidification. This universal model considers solute interactions, solute drag, and solute field ahead of the advancing dendrite front. The linear relationship between dendrite size and 1/Qx indicates that the model can accurately predict the effects of alloy elements and process parameters on the dendrite size of HNSS ingots. Compared with previous models for multicomponent alloy systems, the proposed universal model has at least 30 % better prediction accuracy, which makes it more suitable for complex alloy systems, such as HNSS.
