    Recent Developments in the Continuous Processing of Steels

    This paper reviews recent developments in the contin- uous processing of steels in Japan.The following items are discussed:continuous casting-direct rolling(CC-DR) process of hot-rolled strip:thermomechanical control process(TMCP)of heavy plates:in—line heat treating pro- cess of rails:direct lead patenting(DLP)process of wire rods;and fully integrated processing line(FIPL)of cold-rolled strip.

    Application of Acoustic Emission to the Study on Cathodic Polarization and SCC for High Strength Steels

    The ambiguous effect of cathodic polarization on SCC of two high strength steels in 0.1 M Na_2HPO_4 and 0.1 M NaNO_3 has been investigated by means of meas- uring electric resistance(R)and recording acoustic emis- sion(AE)signals simultaneously.Results showed that AE sensitivity strongly depends on K value in different solu- tions.Both anodic and cathodic polarization can acceler- ate crack growth rate at high K values,but it appears that there are only subtle differences in their AE characteristics.AE signals only reflect the macroprocesses of crack growth rather than the elementary ones and can not be used for identification of the micro-mechanisms of SCC.

    The phase diagram of the binary system MnO-Nb_2O_5 was studied by means of the differential thermal analysis(DTA),X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Thermodynamic da- ta of the new compounds 4MnO·Nb_2O_5 and MnO·Nb_2O_5were found as follows: 4MnO·Nb_2O_5:t_m=1398±2℃ △H_m=129000(J/mol) △S_m=77(J/mol,K) △G_m~o=129000-77T(J/mol) MnO·Nb_2O_5:t_m=1499±2℃ △H_m=86940(J/mol) △S_m=49.6(J/mol,K) △G_m~o=86940-49.6T(J/mol) The eutectic parameters for the system are given below: t_(E1)=1383±3℃ N_(E1(MnO))=0.896 t_(E2)=1312±2℃ N_(E2(MoO))=0.713 t_(E3)=1400±4℃ N_(E3(MnO))=0.231

    Age Hardening in Rapidly Solidified Al-V-Zr Alloy

    Rapidly solidified Al-3.9V-0.1 Zr alloy is a single sol- id solution.The metastable limited solid solubility of solute V in Al reaches 3.9 wt-% under about 10~6 K/s cooling rate.A strong age hardening response have been observed in this alloy.A large amount of dislocation lines and loops were observed in the alloy aged at 100-150℃: and an age peak occurs at 450℃,the hardness value in- creases by a factor of 2.The precipitate which is responsi- ble for age hardening is identified to be Al_V(Al).

    Infrared Measurements of Heating and Cooling Emissions in Aluminium and Steel during Tensile and Cyclic Loading

    In this paper,a new thermographic method based on the measurement of infrared emission(IR) from the surface of loaded body has been used to study the cooling and heating in aluminium and steel specimens under tensile and cyclic loading.A typical test procedure using infrared to measure thermographic changes near the crack tip and the immediate surrounding area is described.In addi- tion,a procedure for determining the stress concen- tration near the crack tip is also presented.Results are given for thermoelastic cooling phenomenon of metals during the tensile process and IR cooling and IR heating emissions at the crack tip during cyclic loading.Attention is drawn to the multiple phenomenon of IR cooling emission in the received signal as the applied load range increases beyond the elastic limit of both metals.A new application of the IR technique to the determination of the po- sition of crack tip during cyclic loading is also pres- ented.

    Fracture profile roughnesses and fractal dimensions of fracture traces were measured on a fatigued Ti-6Al-4V alloy.It is found that although fractal dimension can well reflect the variation of fracture traces with the measuring units,it is difficult to apply it to quantitative analysis of fractured surfaces because of the dependence of the meas- ured profile roughness on the measuring units.Based on fractal alternative equation lgR_l(η)=lgR_o-(D-1)lgη was which we intro- duced a parameter of intrinsic profile roughness to evalu- ate fracture profile roughness without restriction of the measuring units employed.

    The magnetic properties and anisotropy of amor- phous(Fe_(80)Ni_(20))_(78)Si_xB_(22-x).alloys have been investigated systematically.The maximum permeability,coercive force and remanence have been determined for as-prepared and annealed samples,The results on the technical magnetic properties of this alloy system have been discussed and compared with Masumoto's.

    In applying the microwave radiation to extractive me- tallurgy,it is essential first of all to find the extent of microwave energy absorbed by various minerals experi- mentally.In this paper,more than 25 kinds of common useful minerals have been individually irradiated by a 500 W,2450 MHz microwave source in an enclosed quartz crucible to ascertain their heating temperature in a definite time.In addition,the reduction and cbloridization tests were also carried out on the titanomagnetite concentrate and pentlandite with microwave heating,respectively. These experiments indicate potential applications of util- izing microwave energy in extractive metallurgy.

    As a part of the systematical investigation of the phase relationships of the Zn-Al base alloys,decomposi- tion of the supersaturated phase β_S in a eutectoid Zn-Al-Cu-Si alloy was studied by hardness testing,opti- cal,electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.Com- pared to the monotectoid Zn-Al-Cu-Si alloy,a similar sequence of decomposition was found to consist of three stages of phase transformation,which were in accordance to various equilibrium reactions at the temperatures above the ageing temperatures.

    An integration depending on the parameter Ф has been applied to the function Фdx so that an explicit formula of specific pressure calculation and an analytical solution are obtained.It has been found that the analytical solution is basically the same as the prevailing numerical one which is from the formula There- fore,it is justified theoretically that for the slip line field in the compression of a thin workpiece a parametric integra- tion is perfectly possible for satisfactory analytical solution.
