    Ductilization of Ni_3Al by Alloying with Substitutional Elements

    This paper reviews recent research on ductility improvement of B-undoped Ni_3Al alloys.Ni_3Al binary alloys with hypostoichiometric compositions show appreciable ductility at room temperature when the samples are prepared by recrystallization annealing after cold pressing,although the alloys with stoichiometric and hyperstoichiometric compositions remain brittle.Melt-spun ribbons with hypostoichiometric compositions contain fine anti-phase domains (APDs),while no APD can be seen in melt-spun ribbons with a hyperstoichiometric composition.The ductility in hypostoichiometric Ni_3Al alloys is associated with low ordering energy of the alloys.The addition of ternary elements,which have been classified as γ formers such as Pd,Pt,Cu,Co and Ag.improves ductility of Ni_3Al alloys.Correspondingly,the microstructure of the melt-spun ribbons consists of fine APDs.The addition of γ' formers such as Si,Ti,Zr,V,Nb and Ta leads to brittle intergranular frac- ture.No APD was observed in the melt-spun ribbons of these ternary alloys.

    Theoretical Prediction of Strength of Composite with Fractal-tree Structure Fibers

    Theoretically;the strength of composite with branched fibers is predicted to be greater than that of composite with plain fibers.The effects of the branching angle of the fiber,and the snubbing friction between the fiber and the matrix at the fiber branching point and the branching step's number of the fiber on the strength of the composite with branched fibers have been studied.It has been shown that the strength of the composite increases with branching angle,the snubbing friction and the branching step's number.

    Plasticity Enhancement Processes in NiAl and MoSi_2

    This paper demonstrates that plasticity enhancement processes previously observed in bcc metals and associated with the presence of surface films and precipitates or dispersoids are operative in or- dered intermetallic compounds.' Some specific results are given for NiAl-and MoSi_2-based materials.The plasticity of NiAl and related B2 ordered alloys at room temperature during monotonic deformation can be enhanced by application of surface films such as electroless nickel platings.Sig- nificant effects are also observed during cyclic deformation.The presence of ductile second phases such as fcc γ or the ordered phase γ' introduced by alloying also enhances the plasticity of NiAl. MoSi_2 exhibits similar effects of surface films and second phases,but primarily at elevated tempera- tures,T>900℃.In this paper,we illustrate the effects of ZrO_2 surface films deposited near room temperature and TiC particulate additions introduced by powder processing techniques.In all cases, the plasticity enhancement is associated with enhanced dislocation generation processes under the conditions of constrained deformation at the film-substrate or precipitate/dispersoid-matrix inter- face of the composite system.

    The procedure of preparing specimens of ultrafine particles (UFP) Fe_3O_4 was studied and the measurement and analysis of the Mssbauer spectra at room temperature was made.After the hyperfine field due to iron was analyzed carefully,it is shown that the interaction of the interfaces be- tween grains of UFP Fe_3O_4 has stronger effects (enlarging the quadrupole splitting in Mssbauer spectrum) and it is found that superparamagnetic effects appear,which means that the magnetic property of UFP Fe_3O_4 is different from that of bulk Fe_3O_4.

    A thermodynamic analysis of the ultrafine crystallites in nanocrystalline materials was presented in this work.It was deduced that the structure of the nm-sized crystalline grains is different from the perfect crystal lattice,characterized by two possible structure changes;supersaturation of alloy ele- ments and crystal lattice distortion resulted from supersaturation of vacancies.Some experimental ev- idences in the literature,which are in agreement of the thermodynamic consideration,indicate that the structure changes in the nm-sized crystallite seems to be a consequential feature of the nanocrystalline materials.

    Kevlar-49 fiber was surface-modified through cold air plasma treatment and plasma grafting of acrylic acid (AA).Fiber surface properties were studied with ESCA,while interface properties with a single fiber pull-out (SFPO) test.The stated surface modifications evidently improved the interfacial adhesion and increased the interfacial fracture energy of the aramid/epoxy composite system.

    High quality (AlGa)InP epilayers lattice matched on GaAs substrates were grown by atmospheric pressure metallorganic vapor phase epitaxy (AP-MOVPE).The relationship between surface morphologies and lattice mismatches was studied.The influence of Al incorporation to the photoluminescence and electronic properties of AlGaInP was measured.The applicability of growth at atmospheric pressure and the passivation of Zn in AlGaInP were discussed.

    The alkali-metal Na adsorption on Si(100)2×1 surface and its promoted oxidation and Si oxide growth have been investigated by means of thermal desorption,work function,Auger electron spectroscopy and photoemission electron spectroscopy.The experimental data showed that there was a new state,interface electron state,near the Fermi level after the deposition of Na atoms.It was found that the presence of Na always caused an increase of the oxygen initial uptake whereas the promotion of Si oxide growth was observed only at the coverage of Na greater than 0.5 ML.A new mechanism of Na-promoted Si oxide growth is suggested in this paper.

    The solid/liquid interface of a directionally solidified Ni-base superalloy with different phosphorus contents was quantitatively described by means of fractat method.When the solidification rate was fixed,the relationship between the fractal dimensionality of the solid/liquid interface and the phos- phorus content of the test alloy was given.Combined the thermodynamics and fractal theory,the ef- fect mechanism of phosphorus content on fractal dimensionality of the solid/liquid interface was discussed.

    The influence of moderate temperature treatment after quenching on thermal cycling behaviour and mechanical properties of the CuAlNiMnTi shape memory alloys have been investigated.It is shown that there will be α phase precipitation in the alloy when it is subjected to quenching followed by moderate temperature treatment at 600℃.The precipitation of α phase can suppress NiAl-base phase precipitation during subsequent thermal cycling,therefore the stabilization of transformation temperature during thermal cycling can be achieved.The suitable amount of α phase precipitation contributes to the improvement of mechanical properties of the alloy by changing the fracture morphology.

    Two phases gamma titanium aluminide alloy,Ti-46.5Al-2.5V-1Cr.was investigated to characterize microstructures and to define the microstructure/mechanical property relationship.Many kinds of microstructure of gamma and α_2 phases were obtained by heat treatments in the α+γ,α_2+γ and α fields.The effects of microstructure on tensile properties,fracture toughness and J-R resistance curve at room temperature,were systematically studied.The experimental results showed that the microstructure had a strong effect on mechanical properties,The duplex microstructure produced by heat treatment at 1250℃×4 h with controlled cooling resulted in the highest ductility of 4.8% tensile elongation,low fracture toughness and crack growth resistance.The fully lamellar microstructure produced by heat treatment in the α field having large grain sizes resulted in the highest fracture toughness but the lowest ductility.

    A promising method —“powder in tube”technique was used to fabricate Ag-sheathed Bi-2223 superconductive tapes with high critical current density.After a combination processing of pressing and subsequent heat treatment,we obtained tapes with high degree of texture,good compaction and uniform properties.At 77 K in zero field,J_C was higher than 1×10~4 A/cm~2 while the highest J_C was 1.69×10~4 A/cm~2.SEM and XRD was used to detect the tapes texture,and the relationship be- tween J_C and the degree of texture is discussed.In addition,the reason for obstacling the improvement of J_C is also investigated.

    A very strong dielectric relaxation was observed in Bi_2BaNb_2O_9 ceramic.The temperature difference between the maximum dielectric constant temperatures T_m measured at 1 kHz and 100 kHz is 65℃. which is about 2-4 times that of relaxor ferroelectrics.The possible mechanism of the anomalous dielectric relaxation was discussed.

    The microstructures of rapidly solidified (RS) Al-Fe-Ce-Ti and Al-Fe-V-Si alloys obtained by means of rotating blade quenching were studied with optical microscopy,transmission electron microscopy (TEM).The featureless zone observed in the two alloys reveals that the new technique offers a higher solidification rate than the inert-gas-atomized method.Under TEM observation the featureless zone presents virtually a micropartition or partitionless feature,and the solute contents in it are almost the same as the chemical composition of alloys.
